Summer is a great time for self discovery. Sunshine beckons us outdoors. Play and relaxation allow time for creativity and discovery. Creativity and discovery opens us to new ideas, experiences, and perspectives. New experiences allow us to learn. All of this contributes to growth.

So this summer, I offer some tried and true activities that contribute to your well-being and growth.

  1. Go Outside: Nature is soothing. The natural world is full of wonder, has no judgment, and is full of hope as it endures through the seasons. It is always available to you. Step outside this summer and find ways to experience the wonder and healing potential of nature.
  2. Read: Books can expand your world-view, spark your imagination, and help you learn new skills. Get lost in a great novel or read up on a topic you would like to learn more about. Money management, parenting, relationships, gardening; the list is endless.
  3. Create a playlist that inspires you: Music is good for the soul. It can soothe or support. Pick tunes that encourage you to love and challenge yourself, and remind you that you are strong, resilient, and amazing. Play it often.
  4. Travel: Whether down the road or across the world, travel pushes you out of your routines and into new places and experiences. New experiences challenge you and offer the potential for fresh perspectives. It also offers time away from work, which renews and refreshes.
  5. Do Nothing: Down time is in short supply in our fast-paced, achievement oriented culture. Summer is a great time to relax in a hammock, gaze at the sky or the stars, sit around a fire, marvel at nature, feel the breeze, dip your feet in a pool, listen to the ocean, stare at a vista…. Doing nothing “productive” is restorative. It allows your mind to wander. Who knows what might come to you when you allow your mind to drift aimlessly. Breathe deeply and enjoy.

So enjoy these long days. Enjoy the sunshine and the flowers. Challenge yourself with new discoveries and fresh perspectives. And do a fair bit of lounging. You will be better for it.
